T it up

Testosterone is probably my favorite hormone. It's just so fun to say (Try it!). Besides it's awesome pronunciation, it also promotoes a lot of great things for guys: Muscle, fat-burning, energy and sex-drive, to name a few.

On top of that, there are several studies that also indicate a significant relationship between Testosterone levels and cognitive function in aging males. So, the decreased reaction times and overall decrease in cognitive function may be directly related to decreasing T levels. No doubt about it, Big T is the man!
We now also know T and the whole "rage" thing is a hoax! Good try though.

So, what things do us guys need to do to make sure our T levels stay boosted? Here's a quick list:
  • Lift weights, preferably heavier weights. Stick with the compound stuff.
  • Get enough sleep. At least 8 hours a night. Take naps too if you can. They can be a godsend.
  • Eat fats. Lots of studies show a relationship between diets high enough in fat and boosted T levels. I'd recommend, at the very least, a diet that gets 20% of total calories from fats. And don't avoid saturated fats. They're not the devil people make them out to be.
  • Don't stress. Cortisol is T's arch-enemy and stress boosts Cortisol levels. Some Cortisol is necessary, but you don't need to bring any more into the mix than you already are. Try some deep-breathing, eyes closed exercises throughout the day if you find yourself losing it.
  • Do the things that make you happy. Don't find yourself in the middle of something thinking, "Why the heck am I doing this?"
Take care of those things and your Test levels should be soaring. And to top it off, I will leave you with a quote from the great Benjamin Franklin:

"For guys, higher T levels and quality of life go together like whey and post-workout periods. Testosterone is the baddest, coolest dude in town. It rocks." (Or something like that!)
